Background
Research and education in palaeoecology has been going on at the University of Amsterdam in various forms since 1966 when Thomas van der Hammen and Lex Wijmstra arrived at the university. In 2006 the groups of “Palaeo- & Actuo-ecology” and “Soil science & Landscape Ecology” were combined during the formation of the Institute of Biodiversity & Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) to form the “Research Group of Palaeoecology & Landscape Ecology” headed by Prof. dr. Henry Hooghiemstra until 2014, and then by Dr. William Gosling. In 2017 IBED was reorganized and palaeoecology became embedded as a key research discipline within the Department of Ecosystem & Landscape Dynamics. For more information visit the department web sites.
Education
Palaeoecology plays an important role within both the bachelors and masters programs in biology, interdisciplinary studies, and Earth sciences at the University of Amsterdam. The undergraduate “Palaeoecology” course is part of the third year of the BSc Biologie and the BSc Future Planet Studies (Ecology & Earth track) programs, while the post-graduate “Environments Through Time” course is part of both the MSc Biological Sciences and MSc Earth Sciences (Geo-ecosystem Dynamics track) degrees.
